Clay is a hand on the trailing edge
Loess in thaw is not mud. It is pottery that has not decided to be a pot.
A wide sole enters, the clay closes, and the trailing edge becomes a brake. Golfers feel that as “bounce that got sticky.” Bounce did not get sticky. Width got held. Nyla’s bucket exists so you can watch the brake appear in a single peel instead of over a month of angry nines.
Mats never close behind a sole. That is why indoor people buy flanges in January and hate them in April. We still ink a mat as a control, then we ink clay, then we make you hold both films. The argument usually dies of embarrassment, which is cheaper than a new grind.
